Craig Montana: Town of about 39 residents, but it swells to hundreds during prime fishing season due to its proximity to the “fish-prolific” Missouri River. Fly fishermen and women come from around the world to get a turn at fly fishing and tricky dry fly fishing.
Craig has a quirky side, too. It is surrounded by big cattle ranches, lots of off-the-grid cabin properties and big-time recreationalists. Picture yourself having a beer and shooting pool at Uncle Joe’s (open every day of the year until 2 a.m.). You could be sitting around the horseshoe bar with a bonafide mountain man or, just as easily, a Wall Street financial wizard. This is about as authentic as you get!
If you are hungry for gourmet cuisine, you will not be disappointed with Izaaks. Fresh fish, urban fare and a full bar. Not what you expect to find here, but always a good choice!
As for guides and shops and entertainment, pop into one of THREE full-service fly shops.
Headhunters Fly Shop has the edgy, hip, progressive vibe. They offer the most lodging, creative retail and internet presence. Owners Mark Raisler and John Arnold “get it” and their team will make sure you are covered for all your fishing needs.
CrossCurrents Fly Shop has a slick setup in a barn-style building on Bridge Street. Owner, Chris Strainer offers Orvis and other fine retail. They also bring you guides, raft rentals and lodging.
The Trout Shop is the oldest fly shop in town. Jerry Lappier and Chris Goodman know the Missouri River! They also know top quality retail, bringing you the most extensive inventory in the area in their huge store with a tasty deli, too. Originally established as the Craig Mercantile in 1888, their historic building now provides lodging and excellent meals.
If/when you decide you want to buy a piece of property in or around Craig (or anywhere in the state, for that matter!) be sure to get in touch with Lynn Kenyon, owner of Live in Montana Real Estate: 406-770-0013 Lynn specializes in river homes, Holter Lake, and has been successfully selling in the canyon for over a decade.
Craig brings you special events to include Caddis Festival, the third Saturday in May, occasional brew fests, live music and film festivals.
